UKABC’s Dialogue with Martin Kent, HMTC for Asia Pacific and an update on CPTPP’s Entry into Force from David Johnstone, Head of FTA Utilisation at the Department for Business and Trade

RICS, London, 5th December 2024

UKABC was delighted to host HMTC Martin Kent and David Johnstone from the Department for Business and Trade for a tour de force covering updates on ASEAN and the wider Asia Pacific region from both a bilateral and wider regional political and commercial perspective.

Over 50 senior representatives from UKABC members, invited businesses and UK government heard first-hand from Martin as he updated on the potential for UK companies in the region. Martin also emphasised how the Department for Business and Trade stands ready to support businesses in succeeding in the region, working alongside partners like UKABC.

David explained how the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership – CPTPP - enters into force for UK businesses on 15 December. When live, this agreement will mean that UK companies exporting both goods and services will be able to benefit from reduced tariffs on certain goods, easier customs procedures, including electronic processing and enhanced access for services exports.

Ian Gibbons, Chief Executive of UKABC then moderated a lively Q&A session which covered a wide variety of topics covering key sectors of opportunity in ASEAN, including financial and business professional services, education and health tech and drilling into further detail on CPTPP.

UKABC is very grateful to our newest member RICS for hosting the Dialogue at their superb central London venue.
