UK-ASEAN Business Council Dialogue on strengthening UK–ASEAN energy cooperation, 28 January 2026

The ASEAN Power Grid is taking shape as a key platform for ASEAN’s future energy security, integration and transition. ASEAN’s economic growth is dependent on the ability to power it.

UK-ASEAN Business Council’s online dialogue on strengthening UK–ASEAN energy cooperation highlighted how the ASEAN Power Grid (APG) is moving from long-term vision to near-term execution, with opportunities for UK businesses across sectors. The dialogue featured

  • A presentation on the ASEAN Power Grid and ASEAN’s Energy Needs by Beni Suryadi, Senior Manager of APAEC and Strategic Partnership, ASEAN Centre for Energy

  • An introduction to the Asian Development Bank’s priority areas for the ASEAN Power Grid by Ms Hyunjung Lee, Principal Energy Specialist, Asian Development Bank

  • An update on the Department for Business and Trade’s APG engagement strategy from Andrew Stokes, Regional Clean Energy Sector Lead

Key takeaways from the business led discussion featuring Arup, Mott MacDonald, HSBC, Standard Chartered included:

  • The APG has entered a delivery phase. Under ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) 2026–2030, ASEAN is advancing from planning to implementation, with power connectivity embedded across energy, economic and finance tracks. Read the plan here https://lnkd.in/eZYqZyzq

  • The opportunity is across sectors. Progress on physical infrastructure must be matched by advances in regulation, system planning, digitalisation, subsea interconnection and sustainable finance.

  • UK capabilities are closely aligned with ASEAN priorities. UK experience in grid integration, HVDC subsea systems, regulatory frameworks, project development and financial structuring is directly relevant to APG delivery.

  • Partnership will determine outcomes. Coordinated action between ASEAN institutions, development banks and the private sector will be essential to mobilise capital and accelerate cross-border projects.

Energy and the ASEAN Power Grid will feature throughout UKABC’s programme in 2026 including at our flagship UK-ASEAN Business Forum in London in March and engagement during the ASEAN Energy and Business Forum in Manila in October.
