PH, UK-ASEAN explore partnerships to create more jobs, build future-ready Filipino workforce - Department of Finance, Philippines.
The Philippine Government and the UK-ASEAN Business Council (UKABC) are exploring stronger partnerships in education, training, and workforce development to equip Filipinos with the skills needed for emerging industries and create more opportunities for quality jobs.
During a roundtable meeting on September 21, 2026, Government Corporations and Investments Group (GCIG) Undersecretary Ma. Angela E. Ignacio highlighted the Philippines’ growing pool of skilled workers and its potential to support advanced industries and attract more investments.
“It is therefore an opportune time to invest in the Philippines as it offers a larger, more capable workforce, a rapidly growing consumer market with rising purchasing power, and with institutional capacity to house advanced industries,” Usec. Ignacio said.
Discussions focused on addressing skills gaps and strengthening industry-aligned training, particularly in areas such as semiconductor manufacturing, engineering, digital skills, and emerging technologies, alongside opportunities for apprenticeships and internships to better prepare Filipinos for the workforce.
These efforts are expected to help bridge the gap between education and industry requirements, giving Filipino workers greater access to skills and opportunities while helping businesses find the talent they need to grow.
Potential partnerships in infrastructure, digitalization, and financial inclusion were also explored, including initiatives to strengthen financial literacy and resilience.
Joining Undersecretary Ignacio was Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Assistant Secretary May Niña Celynne P. Layug, alongside the delegation led by UKABC Chairman Mr. Ian Gibbons OBE, which included representatives from Revolut, Wise, ACCA, Pearson, HSBC, OCS Facility Services, and Prudential Life UK.
UKABC is also looking forward to deeper engagement with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the Department of Finance (DOF) as both sides explore further opportunities for collaboration in trade and investment.
“The opportunities before us—in strategic investments, public-private partnerships, and blended finance—are concrete pathways to expand industries, create quality jobs, and equip our people with the skills needed for the future,” Usec. Ignacio added.
