Responding to Dam safety challenges in Lao PDR, the Government of Lao PDR officially requested medium and longer-term support from Switzerland in technical assistance, institutional development and capacity building. The overall objective of the DSTIA project is to strengthen the capacity of Laos to protect people, property and the environment from harmful effects of poor operation or failure of dams and reservoirs. It will be achieved through three strategic outcomes:

1) Technical capacities of MEM are increased, enabling the Ministry to fulfil its mandate regarding dam safety

2) A functional institution responsible for dam safety is set up, based on international best practices

3) Capacities of dam owners, operators and national universities are enhanced with relevant dam safety guidelines
