Held 7-11 September 2017, the 49th ASEAN Economic Ministers’ (AEM) Meeting was headed by President Duterte of the Philippines. The 10 ASEAN Economic Ministers reviewed the progress and achievements under the Philippines ASEAN Chairmanship on the overall theme of ‘Inclusive, Innovation-led Growth’.

This was preceded by the 10th Joint Business Council on the 6 September which Max Coleman, UKABC’s Head of Corporate Affairs and Business Development, attended. Organised by the ASEAN Business Advisory Council (ASEAN-BAC), UKABC joined representatives from the ASEAN countries as well as from numerous other business councils and similar organisations from around the world.

UKABC contributed to discussions designed to drive ASEAN policy decisions in key sectors. Key points of discussion included the RCEP Trade Agreement, Non-Tariff Barriers, and improved trade facilitation.

Max also had the opportunity to meet and speak with Ramon Lopez, Secretary of Trade and Industry of the Philippines, discussing possible UKABC collaboration with DTI events in the future, and talk to the Singapore Business Federation and what their plans are for when Singapore receives the ASEAN chairmanship in 2018.
