Why is protecting your Intellectual Property (IP) in Southeast Asia important?  This was the theme of UKABC’s recent Digital Export Series webinar, where attendees heard from a panel of IP professionals.

The protection of IP in an increasingly knowledge-based global economy plays a vital role in promoting creativity and competitiveness.  However, many businesses do not realise that their IP may not be protected overseas.

Our speakers were Christabel Koh, SEA Regional IP Business and Trade Adviser, at the UK Intellectual Property Office, and Victoria Armstrong, Senior Associate and Registered Foreign Lawyer at Taylor Vinters Via who dialled-in from Singapore. The webinar was chaired by UKABC’s Director of Trade, Paul North.

In addition to the latest IP developments in the region, topics included ‘What expert help can exporters access before protecting their IP?’

Christabel Koh stressed that when preparing to access the markets of Southeast Asia, you should prepare an IP strategy to prevent loss of revenue further down the road. This is particularly important if you are planning to licence your products to a local partner or if you expect to be selling through local distributors.

Victoria Armstrong then explained that as IP often sits at the heart of a business, it’s essential to protect it in order to realise its full value.
