The UK-ASEAN Business Council looks forward to welcoming H.E. Dato Lim Jock Hoi and delegation, and to hosting a Breakfast Briefing to discuss how the UK business community can be further involved in ASEAN’s economic future. The visit comes following the ASEAN Foreign Affairs Ministers retreat in Chiang Mai (17-18 January) and the EU-ASEAN Foreign Affairs Meeting in Brussels (21 January).
The ASEAN Secretariat was set up in 1976 to provide greater coordination among the ASEAN Member States and bodies to effectively implement ASEAN’s projects and initiatives.
The ASEAN Summit in Singapore last November highlighted the need for continued investment in infrastructure and education to achieve sustainable growth, with a focus on inclusivity. The biggest threat and concern facing the region is the 4th Industrial Revolution and how automation and technology will impact the future of work, an issue that is on the minds of all the ASEAN Leaders. Thailand, Chair of ASEAN 2019, on the 14th January hosted a Special Session on the 4th Industrial Revolution. In his welcome remarks, Dato Lim Jock Hoi highlighted that “new technologies are bringing down barriers, connecting us better and in new and different ways; revolutionising the nature of cross-border relations and economic interactions across ASEAN.”
The UK has a lot to offer ASEAN. Our expertise can meet ASEAN’s needs at a time where the UK is looking for footholds and partnerships beyond Europe. 2019 will be a year of opportunity for the UK to engage and partner ASEAN. The UK’s relationship with ASEAN has always been dynamic, with its strength coming from the many strands of the relationship. This relationship is to get even deeper with the British Embassy to ASEAN set to open in 2019 to compliment the British missions in every single ASEAN country.
This breakfast is for UKABC’s partners and guests. Note that this event is invitation only, please bring confirmation of attendance.
